Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan’s Ashley Dangol, Miku Tammy, and Kaito Yanai earned record times in the 2015 SSC International Invitational Swim Meet held this month at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool.
Dangol set six new age group records in the girls U8 division, while Yanai and Tammy achieved one and two age group marks, respectively.
The 8-year-old Dangol posted three of her six age group records in the freestyle swim. Her 37.17 seconds in the 50m freestyle surpassed her own mark (37.24 seconds) registered on Jan. 24, 2015. In the 100m freestyle, Dangol eclipsed the 1:25.97 of fellow Tsunami Saipan swimmer Nanaka Watanabe, as the former logged 1:21.84 in the meet held from March 12 to 14. Another Watanabe record fell, as Dangol posted 3:00.82 in the 200m freestyle event to break the former’s 3:10.30 set on May 31, 2014.
Dangol’s three other age group marks were made in three different strokes. In the 100m backstroke, she erased another Watanabe record (1:41.39/Oct. 4, 2014) after timing in at 1:34.68. In the 200m individual medley, Dangol’s 3:16.13 was around 16 seconds faster than the previous record of Watanabe (3:33.41/May 31, 2014), while the former reset her own mark in the 100m butterfly (1:53.71/May 30, 2014) after clocking in at 1:31.98.
On top of her record-breaking swims in the three-day meet, Dangol got the high-point award in her age group after collecting 63 points and dominating 10 other participants.
In the boys 15 to 16 age group, Tammy finished only fourth in the high-point award, but highlighted his performance in the three-day meet with record swims in the 100m and 200m breaststroke races.
In the 100m breaststroke, the 15-year-old Yanai tallied 1:10.38, chopping off around a second from the previous age group mark (1:11.22) which he registered on Dec. 13, 2014. In the 200m breaststroke, Yanai posted 2:33.33 to shatter the nearly eight-year mark of many-time CNMI National Team member Rezne Wong. Wong logged the previous record (2:34.84) on March 29, 2007.
In the 11 to 12 age group, Tammy’s lone age group mark came from the 100m backstroke. She timed in at 1:16.97 to break her own record (1:17.30) made on Dec. 13, 2014.
Meanwhile, two more age group marks fell during the annual tournament and these and other individual results will be reported later this week.
