PSS to host Islandwide STEM Fair this Saturday
For the first time, public gets to vote for ‘Viewer’s Choice’
The 2015 CNMI Public School System Islandwide STEM Fair will be held this Saturday, March 28, at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. Participants from public and private schools, all grade levels, will be showcased in this annual competition. Each school is allowed five entries.
Judging will begin promptly at 9am. The public is not allowed in the gymnasium while the judging is going on. However, there will be an open viewing around 11:15am until 12:30pm, after the judges have finished, followed by the award ceremony about 1pm. The public is encouraged to attend. In fact, there is a new “Viewer’s Choice” award this year. Every person is allowed one vote for their favorite project and that will be tallied up so that there will be an additional prize! So, during the open viewing, cast your vote!
Otherwise, students’ projects will be judged and awarded first to third place in grade clusters. The first place winners will represent the CNMI in the 37th Annual Guam Islandwide STEM Fair to be held in May at the University of Guam.
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—STEM for short—are subjects that develop problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills. The STEM Fair has always been one of the best opportunities for students to explore and share their ideas. Through active inquiry students ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas, and communicate their findings. This active exploration helps students to come to a deeper understanding of key science concepts. By communicating their ideas, they develop presentation skills and self-confidence.
The goal is for the CNMI Public School System to provide an avenue for students to express their scientific creativity and problem-solving abilities while using 21st century skills. It should be the air for every student to apply critical thinking skills, to plan, to conduct tests, to analyze and to communicate their findings. Let’s support our young scientists at work! (PSS)
