Last games to determine batting champ
The final two games of the 2015 Saipan Baseball League would determine the batting champion with three players in the running for the individual award.
Nokki Saralu of the defending champion GSM Brewers, the Saipan Stevedore Yankees’ Gary Cruz, and the Jets’ Davie Matagolai are vying for the league’s top batting award.
Saralu is currently on top with a .576 average, either Cruz or Matagolai, who are at second and third, respectively, are mathematically possible to clinch the title.
Saralu must not be too complacent as Cruz, the former batting leader, and Matagolai posted .463 and .462 averages apiece.
One bad or good swing from each of the three sluggers could swing the numbers to their favor.
Ricardo Dela Cruz (North Starz, .405); Jimmy Brel (Fielders, .400); Verlance Secharmidal (Fielders, .368); Jun Rabauliman (Brewers, .361); Pat Alepuyo (Brewers, .357); Keola Camacho (Jets, .355); A.J. Lizama (Falcons, .353); Jerome Delos Santos (Yankees, .350); Marvin Kaipat (Brewers, .343); Goro Iskawa (Falcons, .333); Cedric Ada (Fielders, .326); and Brian Camacho (Yankees, .310) complete the batting list.
Lizama remains the top homerun hitter with two, while Delos Santos is on his way to claiming the most runs scored this season with 17, while Ben Jones Jr., Peter Tomokane, Dela Cruz, Secharmidal, and Cruz have 14 each.
Cruz still had the most RBIs with 21 followed by Yankees teammate Camacho (17) and the Fielders’ Secharmidal (12), who leads the triples department with four while Saralu remain on top in doubles with six.
Brewers ace hurler Vince Cepeda continues to lead the pitching department with a 1.11 ERA and 54 strikeouts.
Falcon teammates Lizama and Peter Lieto are in second and third with 1.38 and 1.61, respectively, followed by the 1.73 of the Fielders’ Joe Palacios.
The Falcons’ Dave Jones (2.25), Jonathan Tenorio of the North Starz (3.00), Yankees teammates Peter Tenorio (3.46) and Kelvin Kapileo (3.86), Mike Muna of the Jets (4.05), and the North Starz’s Richard Dela Cruz (4.20) complete the ERA list.
Lieto (45), Muna (42), and Palacios (37) are the other pitchers with the most strikeouts this season.
The defending champion GSM Brewers take on the Jets at 7pm tonight at the Francisco M. “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field, while the Saipan Stevedore Northern Yankees battle the Falcons with the pennant also at stake.
