Leina tied atop leaderboard at Wichita

Leina Kim rediscovered her old form to join West Texas A&M University Buffaloes bet Whitlee Woods on top of the leaderboard after the opening round of the Midwestern State Invitation on Monday at the Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Colorado State University-Pueblo junior, according to the Lady ThunderWolves website, fired her sixth below-par round this season with a 1-under 71, which Woods equaled after finishing her 18 rounds.

Kim’s six birdies, against the par 72, 5,843-yard golf course, helped her climb atop the standings as she also went 3-under on par-4 holes.

Midwestern State University Mustang Sarah Moore carded a 2-over 74 to place third followed by teammate Sierra Campbell’s 3-over 75.

Rogers State University Hillcat Kina Boon and Campbell shot hole-in-ones, both par-3 holes, at the 147-yard No. 2 and the 167-yard No. 4, respectively.

Julie Sanchez, Kim’s teammate and a senior at CSU-Pueblo, had the second-best score for the ThunderWolves with an 8-over 80 to end up at joint 26th with six others. She carded 12 pars, the most in the 84-golfer field.

Danielle DuPont (96, 76th), Megan McCutcheon (99, 79th), and Natasha Navarro (103, 81st) round up CSU-Pueblo’s scoring.

The LadyThunderwolves are currently in 13th place, while the Lady Mustangs lead the field with a tournament-best 302 followed by the Lady Buffaloes’ 308 and the 309 of the Tarleton State University TexAnns’ 309.

Day 2 action is set Tuesday at 8:30am local time.

Two weeks ago, Kim fired a two-day tally of 13-over 157 to finish tied for 10th place together with University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons’ Joana Yanez in the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
