Gov. Eloy S. Inos has appointed former lawmaker and retired police official Clyde K. Norita as commissioner of the newly created Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

In his memorandum on Monday, Inos informed all department and activity heads about his appointment of Norita.

The appointment requires Senate confirmation.

The governor said that until the Senate takes action, Norita is designated acting commissioner.

“Please extend your cooperation to commissioner-designate Clyde Norita as he assumes his new duties and responsibilities,” Inos told department heads.

Norita rose from the ranks as a career law enforcer, starting from police officer 1 to the rank of police major.

The administration of former governor Benigno R. Fitial appointed Norita as executive director of the Criminal Justice Planning Agency and special assistant to the Department of Public Safety before his appointment to the Commonwealth Ports Authority as executive director.

He was also elected to the 14th CNMI House of Representatives. He lost his senatorial bid in the November 2005 general elections.

In 2008, the Fitial administration appointed him DPS commissioner.
