Defaults, storm spoil Week 2 of badminton meet
Six individuals and three pairs had walkover wins as defaults and the cancellation of Sunday’s matches spoiled the second week of competition in the Sun Palace Hotel Singles and Doubles Badminton Competition 2015 at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.
Tournament director Andreau Galvez chose to postpone all matches on Sunday due to the strong winds and heavy rain brought by Tropical Storm Bavi, which battered the CNMI and Guam.
Mikiya Takahashi, Janelle Pangilinan, and Daniel Kim, eased their way into the next round after their respective opponents failed to show up on Friday. The same thing happened with Hancheol Yu and Jun Lee in the men’s doubles B division.
Yu and Lee also had the same results on Saturday, while the pairs of Julie Lee and Rowena Sison (women’s doubles A), and Oh Im Bog and Joongmin Lee had walkover wins.
Lanie Santos, Rose Lazaro, and Loida Ito duplicated their feat in the women’s singles division.

A number of matches were also played on Friday and Saturday with Nicole Malasarte, and the pairs of Celso Agui and Ariel Mariano, and Edwin Montoya and Joel Ortega scoring wins in under 30 minutes.
Malasarte only needed 21 minutes in dispatching Christy Villaflor, 21-9, 21-10, while Agui and Mariano completed a 26-minute victory over Jojo Savellano and Alvin Alvarez, 21-6, 21-19.
Agui and Mariano, however, dropped a 21-17, 21-14 setback against Montoya and Ortega in 25 minutes in an all-Taga Badminton Club match.
Vilma Reyes also had an easy outing against Santos, 21-14, 21-11; Havika Farro outlasted Merlie Tolentino, 16-21, 21-11, 21-17; while Galvez scored consecutive wins over Mcoi Aguda, 21-13, 21-17, and Glen Buultjens, 21-13, 21-16.
Lee and Sison remained undefeated in the women’s doubles B class, highlighting their march on top of the field with a come-from-behind 19-21, 21-19, 21-20 win over Farro and Malasarte.
Lee and Sison—trailing twice in the third set, 11-6, and the last 19-15—scored six straight points as Farro and Malasarte ran into a spate of errors to complete their amazing comeback.
