Mayor’s Office captures 132 stray dogs
So far this year, about 132 stray dogs have been taken off the streets as part of the Saipan Mayor’s Office stray dog removal campaign, according to dog control program manager Spencer Marchadesch.
The first phase of the campaign was conducted from Feb. 9 to 20 in the villages of Dandan and Garapan. A total of 60 dogs were caught—40 from Dandan and 20 from Garapan.
The second phase was in Koblerville and China Town from Feb. 23 to 26 and it resulted in the removal of 40 strays.
The remaining captures were from complaints and urgent requests received by the dog control program.
The Mayor’s Office is now working at San Antonio and Navy Hill from March 9 to 20. Then they will hit Chalan Kanoa and Puerto Rico from March 23 to April 3; Susupe and Tanapag from April 6 to April 17; San Jose and San Roque from April 20 to May 1; and Chalan Kiya and As Matuis from May 4 to May 15.
“We still get a lot of complaints of stray dogs in other villages, near dog bites, and dogs chasing kids. So sometimes, we have to reroute from our scheduled villages and respond to the complaints,” Marchadesch said.
“We are asking the community to be patient as we continue our stray dog removal campaign and try our best to take care of everyone’s complaints. As much as we want to stay at one village at a time, we still have to reroute,” he added.
Marchadesch assured that the campaign would continue every year and not just once.
In related news, villages are starting to look clean due to the Mayor’s Office’s beautification project of sending community workers out to both sides of the island, with the goal of eventually cleaning every village on Saipan.
In an earlier interview with Mayor’s Office field operations director Joan Aquino, she said that staff have been working hard for the past weeks and the project is going smoothly. They will also tackle road works in the process.
