Starz nip Fielders for second win
Jon Tenorio pitched a complete game, while Ricardo Dela Cruz had three hits to lead the North Starz to a 9-8 win over the IP&E Fielders in last Friday’s Saipan Baseball League game at the Francisco M. “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.
The Starz, trailing 8-6, scored three times in the top of the ninth with Dela Cruz leading off with a single and scoring on a wild pitch while Rim Cruz, who also singled, stole home to tie the game.
First baseman John Acosta had another single and was driven home by a Nicko Martin RBI single.
Tenorio was tagged with six earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts and two walks, and the Starz defense foiled the Fielders’ attempt to move ahead in the bottom of the ninth.
Tenorio, with the Starz holding on to that one run lead, forced Jimmy Brel to an infield fly while Ton Tenorio flied out to Ian Lizama for quick two outs.
The Fielders put the tying run on first after Tom Guerrero got on base on an error by third baseman Wally Emul.
Tenorio, however, ended the game when he forced Ron Whylie to an infield fly that was caught by Acosta.
Dela Cruz went 3-for-4 with one run scored and had two RBIs, an RBI triple in the seventh inning, and RBI single in the third. Emul scored twice going 2-for-5 with an RBI while Tim Cruz, went 2-for-5 with one run and two stolen bases.
The loss foiled Brel’s 3-for-5 plate appearance with two doubles and one run, while Cedric Ada, 2-for-3, had one run with a double and an RBI.
Guerrero, Whylie, and Verlance Secharmidal all batted 2-for-5 with the former scoring two runs. Whylie had one run and one RBI while Secharmidal had an RBI triple and scored one run.
Palacios lasted eight innings for the Fielders giving up six unearned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
