Tropical Storm Bavi may turn into a typhoon; to approach south of NMI

Tropical Storm Bavi moved yesterday through the western Marshall Islands and is expected to approach the southern part of the CNMI as a typhoon by Sunday or Monday.

As of 4pm, the center of Tropical Storm Bavi was 80 miles south-southeast of Ujae, 150 miles west-southwest of Kwajalien, 275 miles northeast of Kosrae, and 1,480 miles east-southeast of Guam, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, the storm was moving west-northwest at 9mph.

Bavi is forecast to gradually intensify into a typhoon over the weekend and to turn toward the west-northwest and approach the Mariana Islands by Sunday or Monday.
