Garapan street market gets new layout

Effective last night, the Thursday night street market has a new layout.

According to Commonwealth Council of Arts and Culture executive director Angel S. Hocog, they have removed the tents and booths close to the road.

“Now that’s gone,” he said. “So everyone passing by gets to see what’s going on inside,” he said.

They are also expanding the street market, he said, because of the many vendors on their waiting list that want to join the market.

“It’s a wider setup. We are adding 10 additional vendors on top of what we have right now,” he said.

These would be food, arts and crafts and merchant vendors, he said.

As the Thursday night market grows, there have also been talks of reopening the Tuesday market, according to Hocog.

“I see a potential to a create an extra day. But my plan is—if I should make the decision—it’s not going to be like the Thursday market…. It would be strictly to promote local produce.”

“We’ve invited local vendors. So people can see how they can use their vegetables,” he said.

Vendors have been pushing for a new market, he said. Hocog would like to talk with local farmer groups about the plans.
