Saipan Community School last Friday lauded students who excelled in the recent National Junior Speech and Debate Association (formerly National Junior Forensic League) regional competition.
Two seventh graders led the winners’ list as Esther Park won first place in Story Telling and fourth place in Prose, while classmate Kate Ishida won first place in Original Oratory, second place in Humorous Interpretation, and third place in Prose.
A pair of sixth graders, Maxine Rabago and Shaina Lee, meanwhile, finished third place in Duo Interpretation. Lee also bagged fifth place in Poetry, while their classmate, James Park, came in fourth place in both Poetry and Humorous Interpretation.
A total of eight students from SCS qualified for the NJSDA regional competition held last Feb. 28 at the Mt. Carmel School campus.
Seventh graders Sunny Wu, Ye Lee, and Jeffrey Seo also made it to the finals of the regionals.
The school’s NJSDA team is coached by sisters Ashley and O’ronia Sikayun.
Park and Ishida will now compete in the National Junior Speech and Debate Association National Competition set from June 16 to 19, 2015, in Dallas, Texas.
