Humanities Council to sponsor summer research workshop
The Northern Marianas Humanities Council will sponsor a one-week (40-hour) history research workshop from June 29 to July 3 at the Northern Marianas College.

This workshop, facilitated by University of Guam professor Dr. Michael Clement Jr., will provide participants with the basic tools to conduct historical research in the Mariana Islands.
Participants will learn how to identify historically significant topics, develop scholarly research proposals, navigate local archives, and conduct oral history.
The workshop will also familiarize participants with the technical aspects of writing a scholarly research paper.
In addition to methodology, the course will introduce participants to the ethical concerns and cultural/historical implications of conducting research in small island communities.
Each participant will produce a short research paper by the conclusion of the workshop and authors will be invited to present their papers at the upcoming 3rd Marianas History Conference in September.
The workshop will be limited to 15 participants and selection will be competitive. It is open to the general public. Priority will be given to classroom history and Social Studies teachers and instructors.
Application forms may be downloaded from council’s website, www.northernmarianashumanities.org, or picked up at the council office in the Springs Plaza building in Gualo Rai.
Applications must be received by the council on or before June 1, 2015.
Clement is an assistant professor of history at UOG. He holds a master’s degree in Micronesian Studies from UOG and a Ph.D. in Pacific History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
