Jets walk off in 9th on Starz errors
Dave Matagolai drove in a run and the Jets scored two more on the North Starz’s consecutive errors to complete a 6-5 come-from-behind win in last Friday’s Saipan Baseball League game at the Francisco M. “Tan Ko” Palacios Baseball Field.
The walk-off win was the first triumph this season by the struggling Jets of manager Froialan Camacho after eight games while handing their victims a sixth loss against one victory.
The Starz, up 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, only needed three outs to give Jonathan Tenorio, who pitched a complete game, the win.
Luck, however, sided with the Jets that night.
Terson Eina led off with a walk, but Keola Camacho had an infield fly that was caught by first baseman John Acosta for the first out. Matagolai singled to drive in Eina and later scored on left fielder Ricardo Dela Cruz’s throwing error to tie the count.
Tenorio then forced A.J. Evangelista to a pop-up fly that was caught by Starz’s Jonathan Wilson for the second out.
Mike Muna got on base on a fielding error by E.J. Tenorio and scored the winning run on another error by the Starz third baseman.
Matagolai tossed eight innings allowing four runs, all unearned, on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Eina held down the Starz at the top of the ninth and after giving up a lead-off triple to Wally Emul, who scored on an error by centerfielder Evangelista, retired Jesse Sablan and Nicko Martin.
Eina walked Dela Cruz but he ended the inning by striking out E.J. Tenorio to set up the thrilling finale.
Matagolai went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Palmerson Monkeya had a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Jonathan Tenorio pitched a complete game but could not close out with the win. He surrendered six runs, two earned, on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks.
