Shriners holds outreach at CHC’s Children’s Clinic

Providing services and outreach every six months throughout the entire Region 9 Pacific Basin for the past 15 years (which includes the CNMI, Guam, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Marshall Islands, and America Samoa), the Honolulu Shriners Hospital for Children was recently in the CNMI to provide services for children and children/adolescents with special health care needs, ranging from ages 0 through 18 years. From Feb. 3 to 6, Shriners provided Outreach Clinic at the CHCC Children’s Clinic in which 93 patients were seen, with two trauma surgeries conducted.

The Shriners team consisted of Dr. Craig Ono, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon; Cherlyn Caneda, APRN, Nurse Practitioner; Sandy Zukeran, Outreach Coordinator; and Ken Mandler, Orthotist, all of whom are equipped and staffed to care for children with congenital orthopedic issues, which are problems resulting from orthopedic injuries, including diseases of the bones, joints and muscles. Shriners also treat patients with healed burns who, as a result of those burns, may have developed orthopedic complications, such as scarring and deformity of the limbs.

Alongside doing philanthropic work with children and adolescents, Shriners is currently planning on updating their services to regularly include having an OR (operation) schedule, especially for trauma patients, such as fractures in children. Furthermore, Shriners plans to further enhance services among the Pacific Region with the use of telehealth/telemedicine. Susan Yamamoto, the telemedicine coordinator, was here as well to conduct the assessment.

For families who have children with orthopedic concerns, they can visit CHCC-Division of Public Health Services or contact Shiella Marie Perez at 236-8714 for further inquiries. (CHCC)
