Golf eyed as Little League regional fundraising event
The Asia-Pacific-Middle East Regional Tournament organizing committee will hold a golf tournament as a fundraiser to augment the cost of hosting the annual Little League event.
Former Saipan Micronesian Games Organizing Committee chair Rex Palacios is helping organize the golf tournament, which is set in May.
The final date will be announced at a latter time with either Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort Club or Marianas Country Club as the venue.
Tournament format will be single Peoria to make the scoring simpler and quicker since the organizers already have software to compute the final scores once the golfers turn in their scorecards.
Palacios said they would start printing the tickets, which will be $100 each, and they would set the limit of participants to 144 golfers only.
“We would start selling the tickets one month before the tournament. Sometime in April the tickets will be out,” said Palacios during yesterday’s meeting at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.
He added that he has also talked to three local golf club presidents and they said that they would support the fundraising initiative.
“It is for a good cause and the proceeds of the event would augment the cost of hosting the tournament. Some of those who will buy tickets would not actually play, they just want to help in the fundraising event.”
Raffle prizes would also be given away during the banquet of the golf tournament where organizers are preparing for a maximum of 200 people including the volunteers.
Palacios said they would need to start recruiting volunteers that would help them in running the golf tournament.
“We’ll be looking for volunteers in the next two months. Probably those parents or players under the Little League program who are old enough to assist us,” added Palacios.
The Legislature has already appropriated $50,000 for the Commonwealth’s hosting of the regional tournament while additional funds would come from the fees that would be collected from all the participating teams.
