Daniel, which won the last edition of the Genesis Cup after beating Isaiah in the finals, was pitted against Caleb in the curtain-raiser and coasted to a 65-52 victory. In the second game, Joshua downed Ezekiel, 60-54, to join opening day victors Isaiah and Gideon in the winners circle.
Jo Hernaez top-scored for Daniel with his 16 points, 14 of them came in the second half, as his team protected its double-digit spread en route to the 13-point winning margin.
Daniel established a 31-21 halftime edge with Mark Del Carmen, Dindo Pablo, and Reli Del Rio joining forces in the first half and combining for 20 of their total points. The trio slowed down in the second half, but Daniel had nothing to worry as Hernaez stepped in to keep their safe distance, while Caleb never made headway in the final frame to drop its opener.
Michael Cabanas led Caleb’s losing cause, tallying 14 points.
In the second game, Donnel Isip was on target in Joshua’s debut, firing a game-high 23 points to power his team to the 6-point win. Two other Joshua players hit double figures with Allan Chavez and Jess Calub chipping in 15 and 10, respectively.
Isip had an explosive first-half, knocking in 17 points to give Joshua a 4-point cushion at the turn, 28-24. Joshua retained the lead as Isip this time drew help from Calub and Chavez and matched every basket Mike Surima, Brendon Perez, and Vhoie Francia scored.
