Due to a shortage of cash, the public should expect more water outages, sewer service disruptions, and worse-power generation failures, according to Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Abe Utu Malae yesterday.

Malae said that CUC is having trouble buying replacement parts and pumps/motors because it is short of cash.

He discussed CUC’s financial problem with Saipan Tribune after being asked on Monday for comments on a Koblerville resident’s complaint about the lack of water supply to their residence since last week.

Eric Agulto Borja said that he, his family, and his neighbors have been suffering due to the lack of a water supply since Thursday or Friday.

Borja urged CUC to correct the problem and stop “making the people suffer.”

In an email to Saipan Tribune early yesterday morning, Malae said the reason for the shortage of water in Borja’s area is that two well pumps were down at Koblerville.

Malae said the wells are, however, back on line as of Monday afternoon.

“We are short of cash because certain large customers are not paying their bills on time,” the executive director said.

CUC, Malae said, can’t even buy pre-paid meters and materials to prepare for the typhoon season.
