Commerce, DLNR appointees face Senate hearings

The Senate Committee on Executive Appointment and Government Investigation is set to conduct separate public hearings on the appointment of two key Cabinet department heads.

Mark O. Rabauliman, appointed as secretary of Department of Commerce, and Richard B. Seman, appointed as secretary of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, are set to face hearings today on Capital Hill.

All indications seem to point to the confirmation of the two appointees, as they are already taking on major concerns in their respective departments.

Rabauliman on Tuesday presided over a Casino Commission hearing on a casino-related issue, while Seman has been recently involved in a “position letter” on the proposed listing of 23 Marianas species under the Endangered Species Act.

In late January, Gov. Eloy S. Inos and Lt. Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres nominated former representative Seman to head DLNR, while also informing Rabauliman that he will stay on as DOC secretary. Both would serve in an acting capacity until the Senate confirms them.

Seman, who bid adieu to his House seat, said he is grateful for Inos and Torres’ trust in him to lead once again an important agency like DLNR.

Seman served as DLNR secretary from 2004 to 2006 at the tail end of the administration of former governor Juan N. Babauta.

Rabauliman meanwhile said he looks forward to continue to lead the agency, which is responsible for growing the economy.
