Eye Sees, Jake Catering win DLX opener

Eye Sees and Jake Catering started their bid in the 2015 DLX Invitational Basketball League on a high note after routing their respective foes last Saturday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

Eye Sees and Mawati played in the league’s opening game with the former walking away with a 62-47 victory, while Jake Catering had a similar easy win over Team Compound, 70-56, in the second match of the night.

Jake Catering made up for its second-quarter meltdown with a strong finish, scoring 27 points against the only 12 of Team Compound for a 14-point winning margin.

Jake Catering once held a double-digit lead, 19-8, but tallied only 7 points in the second to lose the upper hand and was still behind, 43-44, after the third period. In the fourth, Jake Catering went all out to spoil Team Compound’s debut.

The backcourt duo of White Capalad and Ferrick Aguon teamed up in Jake Catering’s solid fourth quarter with the former firing 11 points and the latter adding 9. Capalad led all scorers with his 28 markers, while Aguon also finished in twin digits with 21.

The 27 points were Jake Catering’s biggest in the quarter, while Team Compound had its most points in the second (22) to grab the upper hand at the break, 30-26. Kelvin Fitial paced Team Compound with his 23 points, while Richard Ada contributed 12.

In the first game, Eye Sees also saved its best for last to take the 15-point winning margin.

Eye Sees came to play right from the get-go, but could not pull away from Mawati in the first three periods before finally getting the breaks in the fourth.

Ahead by only 8 after three quarters, 46-38, Eye Sees leaned on Angelo Fernando’s string of baskets to slowly break the game wide open. Fernando opened the fourth with three straight baskets and added two more late in the final quarter to hand Eye Sees the easy win.

Fernando had a game-high 28 points, while Myler David chipped in 12. No Mawati player broke into double figures with Ian Larot drilling only 9 markers.

Eye Sees 62 – Fernando 28, David 12, Quemado 8, Alcantara 3, Muleta 4, Directo 4, Espinosa 2.

Mawati 47 – Larot 9, Enriquez 8, Gontar 8, Nonato 8, Reyes 5, Corotan 2, Rejano 2, Rivera 1.

Scoring by quarters: 13-9, 29-28, 46-38, 62-47.

Second Game

Jake Catering 70 – Capalad 28, Aguon 21, Gunnacao 7, Dayrit 5, Rejano 4, Lagado 4, Garcia 2.

Team Compound 56 – Fitial 23, Ada 12, Camacho 8, C. Nicholas 4, Saures 2, B. Nicholas 2, Cruz 2.

Scoring by quarters: 19-8, 26-30, 43-44, 70-56.
