SHEFA to discuss policy on NMTI anew

The Saipan Higher Educational Financial Assistance will again be revisiting and discussing its policy on providing financial assistance to students of the Northern Marianas Trade Institute, this time on the funding level per student.

SHEFA board member John Pialur said that they have to work on distribution of funding, specifically the procedures and policies that will govern the funding levels for each term.

“We will work on a distribution of funding on different levels because it will make sense so that students from NMTI can purchase their books or whatever they need,” Pialur said.

On Jan. 15, the SHEFA board passed a motion to revisit the policies for NMTI as opposed to only two college terms since NMTI enrolls students throughout the year.

The SHEFA board moved to discuss the policy with the committee on policy and procedures on how financial assistance will be made available for NMTI.

Last year SHEFA approved to include NMTI in their policy so that funding would be more readily available, but Pialur said the only issue is with the distribution part for NMTI.

SHEFA also plans to revisit its priority fields of study grant at the meeting of the committee on policy and procedures.

“We need to get this moving because we have been discussing about revisiting this all the time so we need to set a meeting and revisit the priority fields within our policy so that we could look at the specific levels that students mostly major in,” SHEFA chair Josephine Sablan said.
