Joe Sablan Jr. takes Amigo January Ace

Red-hot golfer Joe Sablan Jr. claimed the Amigo Golf Club’s January Ace after topping the group’s monthly tournament last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links.
Coincidentally, Sablan Jr. finished January’s qualifier round last month also at Kingfisher in first place with a net 65, which was adjusted from his gross card of 73. In Sunday’s final round, Sablan remained consistent with his ball striking and timely putting, as he bagged the group’s first Ace of the Month honors for the 2012 season. Sablan finished Sunday’s round with a raw score of 75 that worked into a 68 net score. His combined net tally of 133 was five strokes ahead of January’s runner-up Doll Yamagishi. Yamagishi ended up with a 73 net score in the qualifier after posting a 97 gross count and adding her 65 last Saturday gave her a net 138.
Notably, Sablan Jr. has been on his A-game in the past months, notching victories in last week’s Grace Christian Academy fundraiser tournament and the Amigo Golf Club’s 2011 Ace of Aces event.
Meanwhile, Lorraine Babauta rounded out the third spot with a final net tally of 139 built on her 65 in the qualifier and 72 in last weekend’s event. Sherlyn Jones (74/69-143) and Frank Sablan (66/80-146) placed fourth and fifth, while Diding Hocog (81/66-147), John Guerrero (81/66-147), Joe Sablan Sr. (78/74/152), Felix Sasamoto (73/80-153), and Ben Jones (77/82-159) brought up the rear.
About a dozen players turned out for each event, which drew newcomers Sasamoto, Carl Hocog and Ben Jones Jr. There are now 26 Amigo members and new players are always welcome. Next month’s Amigo qualifier will be announced later. The combined net scores of each month’s qualifier and final round determine the Ace winners. Both men and women compete against one another in a handicap-based net scoring system.
