Several dozen in Guam violate food stamp, welfare rules

HAGATNA, Guam (AP)—Several dozen people on Guam have had their federal food stamp and welfare benefits suspended for violating program policies.

Pacific Daily News reports 26 people were disqualified during the last three months of 2014 for failing to timely report employment.

The territory’s Department of Public Health and Social Services said Tuesday 20 people were disqualified for buying ineligible items with their benefits cards.

Nearly 16,000 households including more than 47,000 people received food stamps on Guam as of October.

First-time violators will be suspended for a year. Second-time violators may not receive benefits for two years. The department says one person was disqualified permanently after violating the rules for a third time.
