A 27-year-old pilot sustained head injuries when the moped he was driving crashed on the wet road at the intersection going to the commuter terminal of the Saipan International Airport yesterday morning.
Zakaria Aweys Hassan was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment and observation for a concussion and laceration to the head, police said.
Department of Public Safety police spokesman Travis Hurst said Hassan, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, will face charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence.
DPS Commissioner James C. Deleon Guerrero confirmed that Hassan is a pilot.
Asked for comment, Star Marianas Air Inc. president Shaun R. Christian said he was made aware earlier yesterday that one of their employees was involved in a traffic accident and needed to be transported to the hospital.
Christian said Hassan was not on duty at the time of the accident nor did it happen on company property.
“So the company has no ability to comment on this matter,” he said.
Hurst said DPS received a call of an automobile crash on Airport Road at the intersection to the commuter terminal yesterday at 7:18am.
Upon arrival, police traffic officers saw a man, later identified as Hassan, lying on the road next to a moped.
Priority Medical staff, who were in the area, treated Hassan’s injuries. DPS Fire medics then brought him to the Commonwealth Health Center.
Hurst said Commonwealth Ports Authority officers assisted DPS officers with traffic control in the area.
Hurst said investigation concluded that Hassan lost control of the moped on the wet roadway while attempting to turn into the commuter terminal entrance drive at the airport while on his way to work.
