Cepeda pitches Brewers to easy win

Vince Cepeda was almost unhittable all game long to lead the defending champion GSM Brewers to a 13-3 rout of the IP&E Fielders in last Monday’s opening game of the 2015 Saipan Baseball League season at the Francisco M. “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

Cepeda was on the mound for six complete innings and allowed no earned runs on 4 hits while recording 11 striking outs and 4 walks.

Lenny Sablan pitched one inning in relief, giving up one hit and posting two strikeouts to complete the Brewers’ easy victory.

Cepeda and Sablan also had plenty of help from veterans Roy Celis, Jun Rabauliman, Nokki Saralu, and Marvin Kaipat as the Brewers’ offense peppered the Fielders’ bullpen—composed of Tom Agulto, Jimmy Brel, and Joe Palacios with a combined 15 hits.

Celis, a member of the silver-medal winning CNMI men’s national baseball team in the 2014 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei, went 3-for-5 with three singles, a run, and an RBI. Rabauliman and Saralu combined for four runs on 5-for-7 batting. Kaipat, who played at right field, scored one run on 2-for-4 at bat with 3 RBIs.

The Brewers, holding on to a slim 1-0 lead after two innings, went to work in the third where the rout started.

With the bases loaded, former CNMI sprinter Tyrone Omar reached home on a Byron Kaipat walk, while Saralu added one more run after Agulto walked Ray Saralu.

The Brewers scored three more times in that inning courtesy of Rabauliman, Byron Kaipat, and Ray Saralu and then used another five-run inning in the fifth to pull away.

In other news, SBL coordinator Tony Rogolifoi said they are looking for a sponsor to help them fix the lights of the scoreboard at the Palacios ball field. (Jon Perez)
