Marianas High School’s varsity squad swept its first two games to kick off its title retention bid in the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Volleyball League on a high note last Thursday at the MHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Dolphins dethroned 2013 champion Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles in last year’s title showdown, 24-26, 25-20, 18-16.

MHS continued its mastery over GCA with the Lady Dolphins winning all three sets against the Lady Eagles in an early rematch of last year’s finale, 25-18, 25-12, 15-13.

The Lady Dolphins then showed no signs of fatigue as an hour later they handed the Mt. Carmel School Lady Knights a 25-17, 25-13, 15-9 thrashing.

The setback prevented Mt. Carmel’s varsity side to follow up its masterful 25-14, 25-12, 15-5 win over Kagman High School earlier in the day.

MHS’ junior varsity squad also debuted with a triumph against its counterpart at Saipan Southern High School, 25-23, 25-4, 10-15.

In other games, Saipan International School’s JV and varsity teams defeated their respective foes.

The Geckos’ JV side dealt Kagman’s JV squad a 25-23, 28-16, 3-15 beating while their varsity team pulled off a 25-17, 25-10, 12-15 decision against Saipan Southern’s varsity squad.

Meanwhile, action continues tomorrow with the junior varsity squads of MCS and SSHS, and MHS and SIS facing off in the 4:15pm opening matches at the south and north courts.

It will be an all varsity show in the 5:15pm and 6pm games with GCA taking on SSHS at the north court and SIS battling KHS at the south side. The final matches will be against SSHS and MCS at the south court while MHS faces Kagman in the other side.

Organizers are reminding all players to remove their jewelry and accessories before stepping inside the court and at the same time advised athletes to avoid chewing gum, while playing.

Also, teams that are warming up must try their best not to interrupt an ongoing match at the other court and if their ball accidentally rolls into the other court they should immediately shout at the umpire to halt the game.

Fans are also advised to be courteous and not to loiter around the serving areas. (Jon Perez)
