The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality through its Division of Coastal Resources Management is thrilled to announce the relaunch of their Adopt-A-Beach program.

BECQ is looking for groups to sign up and commit to cleaning a beach of their liking four times a year. The agency will assist and provide the supplies needed for the first cleanup.

“In addition, we will provide your group with information about the trash found and its potential hazards on the environment and further assist in the removal of trash collected,” BECQ said in a statement yesterday.

“For becoming an active steward of the environment and community, BECQ will recognize your commitment and hard work by featuring your group’s photo in the BECQ and DCRM Facebook as well as on the BECQ website. We will also recognize all Adopt-A-Beach participants during the Environmental Awareness Month in April.

“Beach cleanups are a great way to bring awareness to communities and residents. We have to remember that trash is a result of human behavior. Litter anywhere on the island will eventually find its way to the reef. We can catch some of that before it hits the water by performing beach cleanups. But the best thing to do is make sure our trash finds its way into the appropriate receptacles and not the ground.

“Let us know what your favorite beach is and sign up to be an Adopt-A-Beach participant!

“If interested in adopting a beach, contact Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality at 664-8513 or stop by our office.” (BECQ)
