Only eight sports will be played in the 9th Pacific Mini Games that Wallis & Futuna will be hosting in 2013.
The list includes athletics, beach volleyball, Rugby 7s, sailing, taekwondo, va’a (canoe racing), volleyball, and weightlifting. Of these eight sports, only four are played in the CNMI-athletics, beach volleyball, canoe, and volleyball. However, only athletics and beach volleyball had been sending representatives in previous off-island competitions in the past years.
In the 8th Mini Games in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, the Commonwealth sent only two athletes in triathlon’s Joshua Manglona and golf’s Jess Wabol. Fifteen sports were featured in the Mini Games two years ago with Niue leading the medal board with its 32-26-20 gold-silver-bronze tally. Rounding out the Top 3 were the Federated States of Micronesia (23-21-21) and Tahiti (21-22-16).
The CNMI’s participation in the 9th Pacific Mini Games is expected to be discussed in the October meeting of the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association
The eight sports in the calendar of events for the 9th Pacific Mini Games were approved during the General Assembly of the Pacific Games Council early this month in Noumea, New Caledonia.
Wallis & Futuna, which unanimously won the hosting rights for the 2013 Mini Games during the Pacific Games Council General Assembly in Apia in September 2007, will run the competition from Sept. 2 to 12.
Athletes rep to council selected
Meanwhile, the election of athletes representative to the executive board of the Pacific Games Council also took place in New Caledonia early this month.
Around 900 athletes participated in the election with Fiji swimmer Carl Probert winning the contest over fellow swimmer Diane Bui-Duyet of New Caledonia and table tennis player Anolyn Lulu of Vanuatu.
The winner of the election was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2011 Pacific Games on Sept. 15 with no less than council president Vidhya Lakhan of Fiji calling Proberts’ name.
