The CNMI’s Malika Miyawaki managed to save a win in a team tournament in Australia last weekend, while Robbie Schorr dropped two matches.

Miyawaki played the second singles rubber for the Pacific Oceania Touring Team and defeated Australian Capital Territory’s Ashleigh Simes in the Girls 12s Margaret Court Cup, 7-5, 7-6. She was the lone player on her squad to win a match in the pairing as Pacific Oceania dropped the first (singles) and third rubber (doubles). Tahiti’s Naia Guitton fell to Annerly Poulos, 0-6, 2-6, and also lost her and Lea Lamorelle’s doubles tiff against Simes and Poulos, 6-2, 6-2.

Pacific Oceania went on to drop its first game in the team tournament, 20-35, and was relegated to the loser’s bracket where it was paired against South Australia A.

Miyawaki suited up for Pacific Oceania’s doubles team versus South Australia, partnering with Guitton in playing in the third rubber against Natasha Russell and Alana Repanich. The two Aussie bets prevailed in the pro-set, 8-2 to lift their team to a 22-13 victory. Guitton and Lamorelle also faltered in their separate singles games with the former falling short in a three-set match against Repanich, 6-2, 2-6, 3-10, and the latter beaten via sweep by Charlotte Kepenaers-Pocz, 1-6, 1-6.

With two losses, Miyawaki and company failed to advance to the plays and settled for the 10th place. The visiting squad finished ahead of Tasmania and Northern Territory, while Queensland ruled the competition after downing New Zealand.

In the Boys 12 Rod Laver Cup, Schorr and his Pacific Oceania squad also placed 10th, edging Tasmania and Western Australia. Japan, China, Victoria A, New Zealand, and South Australia made it to the Top 5, followed by Northern Territory, Victoria B, New South Wales, and Queensland.

Pacific Oceania had a very tough opening assignment in Japan, which cruised to a lopsided 21-4 win. Incidentally, Schorr gave Pacific Oceania its lone point in the match when he bowed to Ryota Caneda in the second rubber, 1-6, 0-6. In the first rubber, Schorr’s teammate Clement Mainguy did not score in his loss to Ryota Koshiba.

The defeat against the favored Japanese put Pacific Oceania in the loser’s bracket versus Victoria and although Schorr and his teammates lost the pairing anew, the squad played better. Schorr was pitted against Luke Vuletic and lost, 3-6, 3-6, while the Gilliant Osmont also fell to John Amato, 2-6, 0-6. In the doubles, Amato and Cooper White downed Osmont and Mainguy, 8-4, to power Victoria B to a 25-12 win.
