Man gets 27-month prison term for ‘ice’ distribution

The federal court yesterday slapped a 27-month prison term against Daniel A. Castro who pleaded guilty to distribution of methamphetamine or “ice.”

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona gave Castro credit for time served.

Upon completing the jail term, Castro will be placed on three years of supervised release.

The defendant was ordered among other things, to perform 100 hours of community work service, pay a $100 special assessment fee, and participate in a substance abuse treatment program.

Manglona granted the U.S. government’s motion to dismiss the remaining three counts.

Assistant U.S. attorney Ross Naughton recommended that Castro be sentenced to 21 months in prison which is at the low end of the sentencing guidelines and consistent with the plea agreement.

Attorney Timothy Bellas, court-appointed counsel for Castro, recommended the same sentence.

Last April, Castro signed a plea agreement with the U.S. government and pleaded guilty to count one of the indictment charging him with distribution of methamphetamine.

According to the factual basis of the plea deal, on May 29, 2013 on Saipan, the defendant intentionally distributed “ice.”

Castro met the law enforcement’s confidential source in the parking lot of the Royal Poker arcade in San Antonio. He entered the passenger side of the confidential source’s vehicle and provided the CS .60 grams of “ice” in exchange for $400.
