Shirley’s Badminton Club dropped the second half of its match-up with Community Badminton Club, but had enough points to seal the second finals berth in the 8th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament.

Shirley’s, entering its final match up against CBC last Friday at the TSL Sports Complex, was holding on to a 4-point lead over its opponents, 62-58. CBC needed at least a 10-5 decision last weekend in to clinch the second finals berth, but it only managed an 8-7 win, giving Shirley’s the right to face Saipan Badminton Club in the championship match. The defending three-time champion SBC bagged the first finals slot after collecting a whopping 80 points, leaving Shirley’s and CBC to fight for the other berth in the deciding Friday duel.

CBC lost a chance to set a finals date with SBC, as it collected 66 points against the 69 of Shirley’s. The youth-laced club would have to settle for the battle for third place against Golden Racquets . Consolatio games and finals final were played last Sunday and results were unavailable at press time.

In the CBC-Shirley’s match, the former quickly collected 3 points after Andreau Galvez and Jen Savellano dispatched the latter’s pair of Ferdie Arago and Windy Fernandez, 21-20, 21-12, in the mixed A division.

Shirley’s evened things up after Fernandez and Lani Bartolome scored an easy 21-12, 21-8 decision over CBC’s Janelle Pangilinan and Havika Farro in the women’s AB.

Shirley’s moved ahead following Leo Xu and Patrick Fernandez’s 21-14, 21-17 win against the CBC pair of John Costales and Jeremi Montejo in the men’s C.

CBC needed to seal a 2-game win in the women’s C to keep its finals hopes alive. Three points are awarded to a team that wins a match in two games, while 2 points are given to the winning squad and one to its opponent if the match goes to three.

The CBC tandem of Patricia Abantao and Micky Caracut eventually got the victory, but was forced to go the full route against Joy Yumul and Vilma Reyes before escaping with a 14-21, 21-20, 21-19 win. Caracut and Nicole Malasarte closed out CBC’s campaign with a 21-14, 21-15 triumph over the Shirley’s tandem of Reyes and Jaja Bocago in the women’s BC. (Jon Perez)
