SCS holds Elementary Christmas Program

Students from senior kinder to grade 5 performed for family and friends the story of the very first Christmas when Baby Jesus was born to Mary and Joseph in a manger in Bethlehem.

Along the way, old holiday classics like O Come Let Us Adore Him, The First Noel, Joy To The World, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and We Three Kings as sang by the students serenaded the over 120 who attended the presentation.

SCS principal Bobby Winkfield said the Elementary Christmas Program was a great way to showcase the talents of the school’s kindergarten and elementary students as well as teach them a lesson or two about the importance of the very first Christmas.

“The junior high have all sorts of activities like ukulele and the band, but we never had anything for the elementary students. This is their Christmas presentation to their parents and loved ones. The first very Christmas when the special baby was born is very special and each one of the songs had something special to say about Baby Jesus,” he said.

“I can’t express how important it is. These are things that are told by parents. If they learn this they will know that there is more to Christmas than gifts and all that stuff. Of course they enjoy that stuff but the part the parents should instill in them is the fact that Christmas is about the birth of Christ,” added Winkfield.

Justin Benefiel, SCS music teacher and coordinator of the program, said the students and their teachers have been working on Elementary Christmas Program since October.

“Every year as a school we come up with a Christmas program. It kind of shows the talents of the students and also we want to point toward our savior and that’s the reason why we have Christmas is for Christ and celebrating His birth. The kids have given a lot of effort, they really worked hard, and did a great job.”

Benefiel said he tried to do a traditional spin on Christmas songs for the program.

“I want to take it back to the old historical songs and really focus on the true theology and what they mean. I want the kids to learn what their parents learned back in the day. I looked at what we needed and how the poem fits with the songs and I think it fit quite well.”

Winkfield and Benefiel thanked SCS students, their parents, teachers, and school staff, especially maintenance officer, Rommel Tiosejo, for making the Elementary Christmas Program a success.

Marianas Eye Institute’s Russ Quinn said he enjoyed the performance Tuesday night as it really made him feel that Christmas Day is fast approaching.

“It’s kind of a great way to kick the season off. It’s a nice way to start the holidays. They did a great job in putting this together. It’s one of the school’s highlights. Seeing all the kids performing and singing I’m happy for all of that.”

Antonio R. Cabrera, one of the parents who watched the program, said the Elementary Christmas Program was impressive given the enthusiasm of the students.

“It’s very nice. The thing I like about it is I really don’t care if sometimes they were out of tune. It’s the effort that they put in. Overall, I was very impressed.”
