The Feds and Department of Public Safety tamed their separate foes to open up their respective playoffs campaign in the 2014 IT&E-DYS Inter-government Basketball League on a high note last Friday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The top-seeded Feds used a second-half scoring spree in coasting to an 83-66 win over Commonwealth Health Center, while DPS thrashed Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, 58-44.

Holding on to a still manageable 34-29 spread at the turn, Ronnel Gamboa and Joe Esteves led the Feds’ second-half breakaway as they combined for 20 of their team’s 30 points in the third period. Gamboa tallied 12, including 10 straight early in the third.

The Feds never let CHC recover from there as it had an answer on its opponents’ every comeback attempt to book its fourth straight win since dropping a 71-65 decision against DCAA on Oct. 20.

Gamboa paced Feds with a game-high 22 points, making three of their team’s eight 3-pointers. Leo Apelo and Juan Camacho tallied 14 and 12 markers, respectively, while Esteves scored 11.

Omar Ajoste led CHC with 16 points, Anthony Raho added 10 markers , and Sam Fernandez and Adrian Flores finished with 10 points apiece.

CHC’s loss to the Feds in the playoffs was a far improvement from the 44-point humbling it suffered against the same team on Oct. 15, 88-44.

Earlier in the first game, Edwin Camacho and Trevor Ogumoro were at the forefront of DPS’ balanced scoring attack in beating DCCA.

DPS held DCCA to 13 points in the first half to enjoy an early double-digit lead and was hardly threatened after that.

Camacho and Ogumoro scattered 11 points each, while Suane Pua and Maverick Saures made 7 markers apiece. Six other DPS players scored 2 or more points.

Perry Inos finished with a game-high 21 points, while Tim Wesley chipped in 11, but they failed to get the needed scoring support from the rest of the team.
