Greenscaping planned for Paseo
Using funds provided by the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce is pushing ahead with plans to install trees at the Paseo de Marianas. This, according to Chamber president Alex Sablan, would complement MVA’s planned “Flower Island” project in the same area.
“What we intend to do is eventually put in greenscapes in the PDM to hopefully cool it down. The concrete makes it such a hot environment we want to put in larger shade trees—greenscapes—o make it more environmentally friendly as well,” he said.
He said the Chamber is working with architect Chris Fryling of N15 Architects for the future redevelopment of the area. Funding is in place for design and development, he said, but funding for the actual construction would come later.
Chamber hopes to have the designs in and completed by next month, he said, adding that they have planned it to complement MVA’s “Flower Island” project, which intends to blanket the island with flowering plants.
MVA is working with Japanese landscape architect Junichi Inada and local architects and engineers on the project. As reported earlier, they are targeting Banzai Cliff and the Paseo to begin the transformation of the island with such the planting of flowers like Bougainvillea, Cordyline, hibiscus, orchids, and anthuriums.
Seven “zones” on island are eyed for the flower project. These include a “welcome zone” at the airport area, an eco-corridor at the east side, a flower corridor along the west, a paradise zone for Managaha, a flower garden zone for the island’s northside memorials, and a wildflower mountain zone on Mt. Tapochau.
