Mayor eyes public land to build pro training ballfields in Marpi

Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores wants the CNMI government to assign a parcel of public land where professional level training baseball fields will be built.
Flores wrote Gov. Benigno R. Fitial to ask for his support for the plan, which he said would “enhance our chances in capturing a market that has the potential of bringing more economic opportunities to Saipan.”
In his letter, Flores said that professional teams from Japan and Korea composed of 80 to 100 players have made the island their traditional pre-season training site, using baseball fields in Susupe and Marpi.
“Because Japanese and Korean professional baseball teams have been returning to Saipan time and again each year, we believe we must seize the opportunity to ensure their continued use of our baseball fields by building professional baseball fields that meet their standards,” said Flores.
The mayor is looking at building four baseball fields, which would require a minimum of 11 hectares, in the northern part of the island “near the current off-road racetrack and land field in Marpi.” He believes that it is the “best area” for the ballfields.
“Construction of four baseball fields is consistent with suggestions we have received from professional teams that regularly come here to train,” said Flores, adding that these teams include LG Twins in Korea.
He noted that the government can begin by building two baseball fields initially and then the other two later on.
Flores also noted that the island can also consider tapping the college baseball teams so they, too, can do their pre-season exhibition games here.
The mayor said he will be working with professional teams from Korea and Japan as well as grants to fund the project.
“With your support, we will win this game. We hope to receive your commitment that the land will be designated for the construction of the baseball fields,” said Flores.
He pointed out that visiting professional baseball teams not only bring their players but also their families, baseball fans, and international media, who in turn bring “a positive jolt to businesses all throughout the island of Saipan,” including hotels, restaurants, and car rental companies.
“The business effect of teams training here are many, positive, and something our government must not let go without trying to find ways to assure its continuity,” he added.
