CUC developing new policy for deceased account holders

The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is developing a name-change policy for new or existing customers using previous accounts of past users, according to CUC executive director Alan Fletcher.

He said this is in line with the board’s push for a smoother and easier operation so that those using previous accounts of deceased users wouldn’t cause any problems for CUC.

Fletcher said he doesn’t know how many consumers are currently using past accounts and that it could be a problem for CUC in the future for incoming users.

The CUC board recommended that management create a name-change policy so that there wouldn’t be problems when they collect on past accounts.

CUC board chair Dave Sablan Jr. said that CUC should prioritize the transition for new customers, so that they could clean CUC’s records of deceased individuals whose accounts are still listed as active.

“That is the collection aspect when unpaid bills from the deceased and those using past accounts don’t want to pay and might say that they aren’t responsible for that account because it is not theirs,” Fletcher said.

He said it is important for everyone who is receiving any service from CUC that the name they place on the account is accurate.

“I still don’t understand why sometimes someone doesn’t change the account name. Maybe they are trying to avoid the CUC deposit for creating a new account or they may have a different reason. But we are creating the policy so that those using past accounts get collected as well and be brought current and then get the name change into play,” he said.
