CUC solicits proposals for power supply resources

The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has issued a request for proposal for new power supply resources such as fossil fuel or renewable energy projects for Saipan, according to CUC executive director Alan Fletcher. The RFP will run through Nov. 30.

Fletcher said that since CUC is seeking projects that can be implemented within three to five years of the award of contract.

“CUC intends for the development of new resources to result in environmentally friendly power, lower fuel and operating costs, and ultimately greater reliability and long-term cost savings for customers,” he said.

CUC is seeking all economically and technically feasible power supply options, including traditional fossil-fueled resources as well as renewable energy project.

Flecher said that CUC shares the sense of responsibility to use environmentally responsible and cost-effective power supply resources to meet the energy needs of the community and in the future, yet it also faces unique challenges when planning for its future energy needs.

“Current generation resources on CNMI’s three populated islands Saipan, Rota and Tinian, are aging and have limited useful service lives remaining,” he said.

The RFP is designed so that CUC gains full understanding of feasible options, operating characteristics and system impacts, and costs.

The proposals will be evaluated by Leidos Engineering LLC.

Leidos was contracted by CUC to provide input and look at RFPs before awarding and recommending which one to approve.

The project is funded by a grant from the U.S Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs and the winning proposal will be decided early next year.
