Hofschneider claims BOE spot for Tinian; Guerrero retains position
Beginning January next year, Herman T. Guerrero will begin his 14th year as a member of the CNMI State Board of Education.
He was the sole candidate for Saipan representative on the board this election. He garnered a total of 8,6638 votes.
For Precinct 1, where he is from, he garnered 1,531 votes. He earned 450 votes from Precinct 2, 1,145 votes from Precinct 3, 730 votes from Precinct 4, and 994 votes from Precinct 5. He earned 1,020 in absentee votes.
In an interview, he said he would like to continue the progress the Public School System has made during his time on the board.
He named Praxis 2 requirements and implementing the Common Core Standards as some examples of past and ongoing work to improve education in the CNMI.
Gunning for the board position to represent the children of Tinian were Florine Mendiola Hofschneider and Martin Matagolai Sakisat.
Lucy Blanco-Maratita, the board member representing Tinian, retires after this year.
Hofschneider led by a significant margin early on when early votes was tallied, at 211 votes to Sakisat’s 94.
Her support continued to dwarf that of Sakisat’s as the rest of the votes came in. In the end, she nearly doubled Sakisat’s tally, with her 918 votes to his 464.
A total of 1,382 people, from early votes, absentee ballots, and people from Tinian, voted for this position.
In an interview before the election, Sakisat said he is originally from Saipan but moved to Tinian. He expressed confidence in his ability to bring accountability to the position and help the people of Tinian.
Hofschneider is a former public school administrator on Tinian. Her father, Felipe Camacho Mendiola, was a former mayor of Tinian.
