MP United Football Club surpassed its performance in last year’s Pilipinas Cup after advancing to the finals of the U17 division of the annual competition yesterday at Nuvali Evoliving Field in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The club, which fielded a U18 team last year and finished third, this time advanced to the championship game after beating University of Batangas in the semifinals, 2-0. Tanapon Unsa and Jehn Joyner scored one goal apiece in MP United’s morning semis game against the last qualifier.

With the victory, the Norman Del Rosario-coached team set a finals date with the mighty Far Easter University Diliman, which was made up of several players who were part of the champion team in last year’s U18 competition. The winner-take-all finale was played in the afternoon and FEU Diliman lived up to expectations, downing MP United, 2-0. No other details of the title match were available at press time.

MP United finished the U17 competition with five wins and one loss, sweeping its elimination round games against University of Sto. Tomas High School, Manila Soccer Academy, University of Batangas, and Iriga City-USANT before meeting Batangas anew in the semis. The team fielded 15 players in the tournament with Enrico del Rosario, Daniel Bae, Chan Woo Jeong, Scott Kim, John Diego Masga, Luis Borja, Marco Borja, Karmello Carlos Rodriguez, Julian Roxas, Ryu Tanzawa, David Yang, and Jason Kim joining Unsa and Joyner on the roster.

Meanwhile, MP United’s U14 team settled for a fourth place finish in its division after losing two playoff games yesterday.

The squad challenged Don Bosco College Canlubang in the semifinals and dropped the morning match, 0-1. Then in the battle for third place, MP United U14 was pitted against Green Barons FC and also lost, 0-2. Pilipinas Dragons took the division title after blanking Don Bosco in the finals, 4-0.
