Eda, SCS dominate cross country race

Seiya Eda topped anew the second leg of the 2014 All Schools Cross Country Series, while Saipan Community School dominated most of the age group competition last Saturday at the Civic Center Beach.

The Saipan Southern High School standout bested 12 other runners, including two from Agape Christian School, in the boys U18 age group after completing three-lap race in 16:47. Eda was five seconds ahead of ACS’ Alan Zhao (16:52) and a full minute in front of Moses Qiu (17:48). Dylan Ackerman, who competed with fellow SSHS bet Eda in last week’s Oceania Cross Country Championship in Guam, finished fourth with a time of 18:03.

Claire Song led a 1-2-3 finish for ACS bets in the U18 girls’ side, topping the age group after crossing the finish line at 22:26 and was followed by Meriam Zhao (22:40) and Ruth Wang (24:49).

Haruya Eda and Mimi Sakano showed the way for Team SCS after ruling the boys and girls U14 divisions.

Eda, younger brother of Seiya, beat teammate Vincent Tudela by one second after clocking in at 11:40. ACS’ Jonathan Xiong came in third at 12:10.

Sakano was the fastest in the girls U14 class with a time of 13:50, almost two minutes ahead of Hopwood Junior High School’s Kiana Valencia (15:22). Elin Wang of ACS finished third (12:10).

Ken Song (5:29), Won Lee (6:01) and Hyun Lee (6:07) completed an SCS sweep in the boys U12, while ACS’ Annie Wang (6:36) and Michelle Li (8:14) and SCS’ Desnei Camacho (8:16) rounded out the Top 3 in the girls side.

SCS and San Vicente School bets were the Top 3 finishers in the boys and girls U10 divisions with Kai Stone (6:51) and Sedrei Camacho (8:03) winning for the Tsunamis.

SVS’ Ron Muna (6:57) and Hyeonbin Jeong of SCS (7:10) completed the Top 3 finishers in the boys U10, while SCS’ Katie Choi (8:11) and SVS’ Delaila Gimed (8:27) placed second and third in the girls’ class.

SCS swept the U8 age group with Derrick Kwon (6:56), Tyler Hunsberger (7:08) and Shea Stone (7:18) prevailing in the boys race and Jenny Zhang (7:59), Chelsea Kang (7:59) and Hila Bacani (8:15) duplicating the feat in the girls division. (Jon Perez)
