Autopsy shows Bjorge died of drowning
An autopsy concluded that Eric Joseph Bjorge, a 52-year-old economist at Bridge Capital LLC who was found dead at the Grotto on Sunday, died of drowning.
Department of Public Safety police spokesman Travis Hurst disclosed yesterday that Guam chief medical examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola performed the autopsy on Monday and determined that Bjorge’s cause of death was drowning.
Hurst said police learned that Bjorge arrived at Grotto in Marpi on Saturday afternoon to snorkel.
“The victim was alone at the time and therefore the events leading up to his drowning cannot be determined,” Hurst said.
Police officers and fire medics were dispatched to Grotto after receiving a call about an unconscious and not breathing male individual on Sunday at 9:24am.
Hurst said local divers spotted the victim in the water by the entrance to Cave No. 3 at the Grotto and brought him ashore.
Medics then transported the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
According to a G4S security guard assigned at Grotto, the victim arrived alone aboard a silver Toyota RAV 4 on Saturday at 2:55pm.
When the guard left at 5pm at the end of his shift, a few people were still at Grotto as there were at least five vehicles, including the victim’s, in the parking lot.
