UOG donation
The Calvo family donated $3 million last November to the University of Guam’s 21st Century Redevelopment Plan. For the Calvos’ generous gift, the University of Guam recently changed the name of its Field House to the University of Guam Calvo Field House. In Friday’s Pacific Daily News, an article quoted Eduardo “Champ” Calvo who spoke at a UOG ceremony celebrating the new name of the Field House. Champ Calvo said, “We see that an investment in the university is a direct investment in our future.” Champ Calvo said his uncle Jerry Calvo encouraged the family to donate the money because “Guam’s future depends on the strength and success of the University of Guam.”
According to UOG Board of Regents chair William Leon Guerrero in the PDN article, the Calvo donation brought the UOG’s Five-Year Plan of raising $30 million for its renovation project to about $7 million.
As a local Saipan woman who is also an instructor at the Northern Marianas College, I believe that investments from the NMI business community in the Northern Marianas College are also “a direct investment in the future of our islands.” I hope the NMI business community will follow the Calvos’ example and give generous gifts to the NMC Foundation, because the future of the Northern Marianas “depends on the strength and success” of the Northern Marianas College.
