The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 73.24 percent occupancy among 11 member hotels for September 2014, a 2-percent decrease compared to September 2013.

A total of 50,602 of 69,090 available room nights sold in September 2014, compared to 53,878 of 71,940 of available room nights sold over the same period last year. Room rates were $116.84 during the month, compared to $107.12 last September.

“Again in September, the trend we are seeking is that the average hotel occupancy rate so far this fiscal year is the same as last year, while the average room rate is slightly higher,” said HANMI chair Nick Nishikawa. “While we are seeing a welcome increased in arrivals from China, it is also important that the Northern Marianas continue to try to attract visitors from the other source markets of Japan, Korea, and Russia to have a balanced tourism economy.”

So far this calendar year, hotel occupancy is at an average 83.20 percent, 1 percent lower than last year.
