The Chinese Association of Saipan is inviting the community to take part in the “Chinese Culture Night” to be held tonight from 6pm to 9pm at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan.

Tonight’s celebration will feature special performances from Beijing artists who will exhibit “Biàn Lian” or “Face-Changing,” an ancient Chinese dramatic art that is part of the more general Sichuan opera.

“Biàn Lian” performers wear brightly colored costumes and move to quick, dramatic music. They also wear vividly colored masks which they change within a fraction of a second.

The “Chinese Culture Night” will also feature “Gong Fu Chá,” a thrilling show based on the tea preparation approach. The ceremony was originally popularized by teashops carrying tea of Chinese or Taiwan origins and by tea connoisseurs as a way to maximize the taste of a tea selection. Nowadays, this ceremony has become a form of entertainment in various fairs and tourist programs.

The Beijing performers are scheduled to present from 7pm to 8pm. Tonight’s festivity will also feature unique cultural performances and exhibitions by members of the Chinese community on island as well as special booths which will open at 6pm and feature Chinese calligraphy, cultural items, artwork, photo booths, and games for children.

The program will kick off with the traditional Lion Dance at 7pm.
