The Tinian Mayor’s Office is requesting the Public School System to include information technology programs for Tinian schools next school year.

In a Friday letter to Education Commissioner Dr. Rita A. Sablan, Tinian Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz said the impending casino and military projects on the island will result in a surge in demand for vocational skills.

“We are anticipating a strong need for technically qualified individuals on Tinian within both the public and private sectors to meet the demand presented by the anticipated population growth due to casino industry and military development,” Dela Cruz said.

These expansion efforts on Tinian include the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino, the construction of the new Alter City Group golf course, hotel and casino, along with the military buildup.

“The job market on Tinian will be growing significantly over the next five years,” Dela Cruz said.

Dela Cruz asked Sablan for reinvestment in a comprehensive information technology program from Kindergarten through 12th grade to prepare Tinian’s youth to take the jobs when they become available.

According to Dela Cruz, Tinian Elementary School and Tinian Jr./Sr. High School have had computer laboratories in the past but these were disbanded due to a lack of school-based IT instructors and computer technicians.

“We need a vocational education program that will teach our youth how to use the various computer applications utilized in both the public and private sectors.”
