Public schools pass post-typhoon inspections

All Public School System schools have passed inspections in the wake of Super Typhoon Vongfong, with mostly minimal damage to school grounds.

The biggest issue, according to Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan, was a downed power line at Marianas High School that forced the campus to close on Wednesday as the lines were within the reach of students.

“It was a very dangerous risk,” Sablan said.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. brought in an additional power pole and took care of the issue at about 3pm that day, according to Sablan.

Also on Wednesday, Kagman High School had its main power panel shut down to avoid burning out equipment caused by the constant flickering of power, the commissioner said. CUC also was there to assist.

“I’m glad CUC came out and supported and did what they had to do,” she said.

Public schools on the island of Rota mostly had fallen debris and trees.

“There was collaboration on the island of Rota, from the municipality office to the school system, coming together to clean up the debris, cut up fallen trees, and get the schools ready,” she said.

On Tinian, a similar cleanup was done, and power did not come on until yesterday afternoon, according to the commissioner.

Assessment will be reported to the Board of Education today.
