Islandwide power outage, limited water supply seen

Typhoon Vongfong, which is projected to hit early this morning, is expected to cause islandwide power outages and limited water service, according to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

CUC acting Water and Wastewater Division manager Richard Wasser said there will be limited water service beginning eight hours prior to the expected landfall of a typhoon or tropical storm condition.

“Some of our wells and booster pump stations will be shut down to protect the motors and controls from damage due to power outages and power imbalances. Affected areas may be islandwide,” he said.

Wasser advises the community to keep stored water on hand for drinking, flushing toilets, and other emergency needs.

“CUC will be restoring service immediately after typhoon conditions have passed and it is safe to access the facility sites,” he said.

CUC Power Division manager Gary Camacho said that Typhoon Vongfong may also cause power interruptions, which could also affect the water supply.

For any assistance, the CUC call center is a 24-hour operation and will be open throughout the storm to answer all calls from three islands, Camacho said.

“They will then forward [the calls] to the field personnel for response,” he said.

Camacho said that CUC should also be immediately informed after the storm if there is any downed wire or for anything that is in contact with the wire.

“CUC’s operations team apologizes for the inconvenience resulting from water service and power interruptions,” said CUC executive director Alan Fletcher.
