Third-quarter push lifts Feds past CUC

The Feds led from start to finish and found an answer on every CUC rally to join Northern Marianas Sports Association and Customs in the winners column. Customs prevailed in the league opener, beating Commonwealth Health Center last Monday, 61-28, while NMSA also cruised past the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs in the second match of the kick-off day, 56-46.
Leo Apelo and Juan Camacho waxed hot early in the game, alternately burying the shots for the Feds in the first 10 minutes of the match. The two combined for 19 points to give the Feds a slim 35-33 halftime spread.
Apelo and Camacho continued with their good shooting in the third period to keep CUC at bay and stretch the lead to seven, 58-51. Camacho hit back-to-back triples in the third and added 9 more points, while Camacho chipped in 7. Ronnel Gamboa and John Ogarto also joined the scoring fray to support Apelo and Camacho’s game-long brilliance. Apelo scattered 19 points, while Camacho finished with 18 markers, and Gamboa and John Ogarto scored 12 each.
Tony Diaz paced CUC’s losing cause with 18 points and failed to get scoring support from his teammates.
John Santos was the other CUC player who finished in double figures with 10, while James Benavente tallied 9 markers. Robert Lieto, Andrew Masga and Frank Mizutani made 6 apiece, while George Poquiz, Sim Iramk and Caster Madracheluib added 5, 4, and 3 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, in last Wednesday’s second game, Department of Public Safety coasted to a 58-44 triumph over Judiciary to also register its first win.
Action in the inter-government league will continue this Monday with NMSA and Customs clashing for the early lead in the 8pm second game, the while DCCA and CHC try to bounce back from the opening day losses when they collide in the 6:30pm first game.
