Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council chair Ramon Camacho wants all Saipan neighborhoods to start being protected by Neighborhood Watch groups again.

“We are going to each school during their Parents Teachers Association meetings to discuss protecting villages and revitalizing the Neighborhood Watch program,” Camacho told Saipan Tribune at the 1st Annual Marianas Indigenous Conference.

Camacho also leads the newly created Neighborhood Watch Task Force educational team and has visited schools during recent PTA meetings, including the Dandan Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, and all Kagman schools.

Camacho and his Neighborhood Watch team would usually make a presentation on how crime prevention methods can be implemented and encourage people to get closer to their neighbors to prevent crime in villages.

Anti-crime signs with words like “Stay alert. Report crime,” “We are watching you,” and “Stop crime. Join the Neighborhood Watch today” will be installed in schools, both public and private, at each main entrance. The municipal council might install two signs at each school entrance, if possible.

Camacho also noted the recent appointment of Glenn Dikito as chairman of the Neighborhood Watch Task Force and other people who will be in charge of the different villages.

Camacho said they have not only been discussing protecting the neighborhoods but also revitalizing the villages and the Adopt-a-Place program to help clean and promote a healthier environment.

Camacho said the Neighborhood Watch program will be continued even after the November elections because it is important for the CNMI to have safe neighborhoods.
