Kammuri causes widespread flooding

The tropical disturbance that intensified into a tropical depression yesterday brought heavy rainfall, causing flooding and water runoff in some areas on Saipan.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, Tropical Depression Kammuri is forecast to intensify and become a tropical storm Thursday night or today, Friday.

The parking lot at Joeten Dandan building looked like a huge swimming pool yesterday morning as continuous rain the past few days clogged the drainage in the area.

Joeten staff immediately pumped out water from the parking lot as flooding nearly entered the doors at Joeten, Commonwealth Utilities Corp., and other commercial establishments in the building as early as 7:30am.

The perennial flooding and water runoff near Shell gas station in Dandan brought a lot of debris to the middle of the road.

The highway in Tanapag was also flooded. Areas near Susupe Lake and some areas on Beach Road likewise experienced flooding.

As of 1pm yesterday, the center of Kammuri was 120 miles east-northeast of Agrihan, 310 miles north-northeast of Saipan, 320 miles north-northeast of Tinian, 390 miles north-northeast of Rota, and 440 miles north-northeast of Guam.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam, Kammuri is quasi-stationary, but is expected to move northwest in the next 24 hours.
