The Sonics crushed KFC, 71-51, in the U21 division game last Monday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, while DYS pounded the Rollers B, 73-41, in the U18 pairing last Tuesday,
A 28-6 scoring surge in the third period allowed DYS to notch a lopsided victory over the Rollers B. Before the third-quarter breakaway, DYS was behind by a point at halftime, 27-28. Djay Ong led the uprising, drilling all his 12 points in the crucial third frame, including 9 straight markers to lift DYS to a 54-43 advantage.
The Rollers B collapsed in the third, as they were held to two field goals and two free throws with only Jona Han and Manny Cobacha scoring for the team. The Rollers B then failed to recover from the meltdown, as they were limited to another single-digit scoring effort in the final canto. They made only three field goals in the fourth with Aaron Ogumoro knocking in a triple and a layup and Han hitting the Rollers B’s other basket.
While the Rollers B had limited options on offense in the fourth, DYS got help from several players. Six DYS players lit up the board and four of them converted at least two field goals apiece to complete the big victory, its second it as many games. DYS debuted with a similar 68-44 rout of the Ol’Aces last Sept. 16, while the Rollers B dropped their first match in the U18 division.
In the U21 age group, the Sonics bounced back from a 50-56 debut loss with the 2-point win over KFC.
The Sonics controlled the game right at the get-go and with the game in the bag as early as the first half, coach Jesse Tudela relied heavily on his second and third stringers to finish off the hapless KFC.
The Sonics erected a 40-17 halftime lead and were never threatened from thereon despite being outgunned in the last two period, 15-20, 14-16.
John Paul Villanueva paced the Sonics with his 17 points, while Erick Dela Rosa chipped in 10, and Jack Aranda and Sean Rabasto contributed 8 apiece.
Art Borromeo had 13 points to lead KFC, which failed to make a follow-up on its 54-43 debut win against Laly 4. Jonathan Gunnacao also scored in twin digits for KFC with his 12 markers.
